Whether you run a brewery with a team of two or two hundred, time is of the essence, and focusing on the most integral parts of your business processes—back of house execution, front of house top-notch service—is paramount.
It’s also extremely important to know what beer styles are trending either up or down to determine what beers to throw onto the brew calendar, but doing all that research is time-consuming and could lead to taking away precious resources from more important aspects that have a direct effect on your company’s success.
There’s a solution to that problem.
Untappd Analytics, a part of the Next Glass family of brands that includes Ollie, Untappd for Business, Hop Culture, and BeerAdvocate, among others, is a tool that provides next-level insight into uber-local or worldwide data from the craft beer industry.
Thanks to the more than eleven million registered users, the Untappd app shines a light on consumer trends to help breweries answer questions and guide owners and brewers down the right path to execute the appropriate brew sessions, branding, distribution, and what to pour on draft.

Ohio: The Fifth Most Checked-in U.S. State in 2024 to Date
The Midwest state of Ohio is home to 399 breweries that serve the seventh-most populous state in the country. Consumers throughout the state have consistently checked in beers dating back to the beginning of 2019 when the data was first collected. Overall, the state has been consistently among the top five states in the country regarding check-ins.
When looking at the state’s data tracing back as far as it goes (Jan. 1, 2019), Ohio ranks number five for check-ins with 16,722,784 at 105,242 venues. Five different areas had more than one million check-ins, including Columbus (3.93 million), Cincinnati (3.36 million), Cleveland (3.28 million), Dayton (1.38 million), and Akron (1.36 million). Toledo had just under one million check-ins over that span with 900,927.
Over the past 365 days, Ohio consumers checked in 2,135,238 times at 33,836 venues, which ranks fourth in the country. The top five rated areas of the state are the same as the five-year span, with Cleveland and Cincinnati swapping spots to two and three, respectively. Columbus (480,153), Cleveland (428,096), and Cincinnati (425,501) were relatively close in check-ins.
When checking the past three months, Ohio has 503,249 check-ins at 16,174 venues, again ranking fourth in the nation. Again, Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati are the top three with 112,991, 102,230, and 99,844 check-ins, respectively. Dayton and Akron round out the top five with 43,355 and 39,960 check-ins.
Let’s take a closer look at what Ohio users have checked in over the past three months.
The 10 Most Popular Beers in Ohio – Last 90 Days
Two trends about the craft beer industry that are fairly evident at this point, halfway into 2024: IPAs continue to dominate (the style has topped the charts year over year, including last year, according to Untappd’s 2023 Year in Beer data) and lighter beers and lagers are on the rise. In Ohio, the consumers are the epitome of those trends, with the top ten most checked-in beers an even split of IPAs and lighter beers and lagers.
IPAs make up four of the top five beers, while one light lager lands at number three on the list, with a light hybrid beer and three lagers making up four of the bottom five in the top ten most checked-in beers of the past ninety days.
Great Lakes Brewing Company appears on the list the most, at four times, with Rhinegeist—whose beer Truth lands at the top of the list—and Columbus Brewing the only other breweries appearing on the list more than once with two each.
