Running a brewery has a lot of moving parts. Whether you have a staff of a couple or a couple hundred, everyone has a role to play and remains busy throughout their scheduled shift, taking care of essential tasks in the brewhouse and front-of-house operations. But with everyone busy, you might not have a person to dig through data to unearth recent trends of the consumers who frequent your tasting room or those within your area who may likely visit.
Untappd Insights is a tool that takes all the man hours out and dumps all the data you need in a few clicks. It provides precision data that shares customers’ behaviors and trends in your taproom and distribution channels.
A part of the Next Glass family of brands that includes Ollie, Untappd for Business, Hop Culture, and BeerAdvocate, among others, Untappd Insights compiles countless amounts of broad or locally targeted data, including distribution, trend, and sales.
As we enter the fall season, and seasonal brews and events begin to ramp up, the data provided by Untappd Insights can steer you down the correct path for your brew schedule to accommodate potential events. This tool and its immense data offerings undeniably can help improve your business.
We’ve previously covered the most popular beers in Pennsylvania, New York, California, Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
In this piece, we’ll leave the Midwest states we’ve covered most recently and head back east to Virginia and show you Untappd Insights’ impact by breaking down the most checked-in beers over the past ninety days.

Virginia: The Eleventh Most Checked-In State Over the Past Year
No matter how you set up the parameters on the data, Virginia regularly finds itself just outside the top ten for most checked-in states in the country. The highest it ranks is eleventh when we look at data collected over the past full year. Over that span, Virginians checked-in just over 1.4 million times at 24,633 venues. Nearly half of the check-ins are in the Washington, D.C., area, with Virginia Beach and Richmond a distant second and third.
In the nine-plus months of 2024, Virginia ranks twelfth with 1,006,860 check-ins at 20,661 venues. In the past ninety days, Virginia has 332,759 check-ins at 11,852 venues, which ranks thirteenth nationally. The state is a hair better when the parameters are narrowed to the past month, ranking twelfth with 105,780 check-ins at over 6,000 venues.
When you expand out as far back as the data is tracked—January 1, 2019—Virginia has logged 12,437,481 check-ins at 80,413 venues. That number ranks the state twelfth in the country. And as is throughout all the data variables, Washington, D.C., was the top area for check-ins with Virginia Beach and Richmond neck-and-neck for second and third.
The Top 10 Beers in Virginia – Last 90 Days
No surprises were found in the top ten beers in Virginia over the past three months. IPAs account for seven of the ten beers on the list, including the top spot and seven of the top eight. More specifically, hazy IPAs are the most popular IPA style, with five of the seven from the New England subcategory of IPA (American IPAs are the other two). There are also two lagers on the list—a Vienna and an American amber—as well as another bottom-fermented beer and seasonal: festbier.
The top brewery to show up on the list is Three Notch’d Brewing, which notched three beers in the top ten. No other brewery appeared on the list more than once.
